“Studying at FIIB, I knew that it was going to be an intellectually rigorous avenue that would lead me to my dreams for international businesses. I was excited to come to FIIB for many reasons, one of which was the sense of independence I gained, the control over how, when, and where I did what I wanted to do (except lectures, of course). Balance between my projects, assignments, and exams has been the most challenging part of my studies. As a result, I was often exhausted, but making weekly and monthly goals instead of daily ones helped me stay on track. “Some of the learning that helped me to move ahead is #NeverStopLearning as I moved my career from retail business management to retail and e-commerce technology. It showcases your individuality, strengths, and capabilities, making you more memorable to employers, clients, or other stakeholders.

Secondly, having an X factor brings diversity and fresh perspectives. It allows you to offer a different approach or solution to problems, making you valuable in team settings or in entrepreneurial ventures. Your unique qualities can contribute to innovation, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking. Moreover, a distinct X factor enhances your brand and professional reputation. It becomes your unique selling proposition, making you more attractive to opportunities and increasing your chances of success.

Ultimately, having an X factor empowers you to carve out your niche and stand out in a crowded marketplace. For me, it’s “Communication & Empathy” that help me understand customer behaviour and what communication can accomplish for them. My X factor and regular learning zeal have helped justify my profession.

In addition to being proud to be a part of FIIB, it has evolved and continues to provide excellent support today; mainly, I would like to thank Imran Sir for his consistent support. My faculty continuously guided me on doubts and confusion about the right path for me throughout my time here. Knowing what works in the industry, we were confident of getting a breakthrough. I am very grateful for the FIIB support that landed me an international job.

Q4. What keeps you on track as a student who became a manager and a successful professional?

Learning never ends, so keep learning and keep growing. Opportunities may take a while to present themselves, but you will feel the difference when you can compete with others and understand the situation better. You will be motivated and motivated to grow further as a result. Remember that we are always on time to start.

Q5. What advice do you have for students as they look up to the commencement of their PGDM program at FIIB?

My advice for students anticipating the start of their PGDM program comes from my experience as alumni. PGDM programs can be intense and fast-paced, so being proactive and taking the initiative is crucial. Actively seek out opportunities instead of waiting for them to come to you. Engage in class discussions, join clubs and organizations, network with peers and professors, and assume leadership roles whenever possible.

A strong network of classmates, alumni, and industry professionals is one of the most significant benefits of a PGDM program. Students come from various backgrounds, cultures, and industries. Be bold, embrace the diversity within your cohort and learn from the experiences of your peers. Balancing coursework, projects, internships, and networking can be challenging during a PGDM program. Avoid procrastination by creating a schedule, prioritizing tasks, and setting deadlines. Seek experiential learning opportunities and be mindful of your well-being throughout your journey. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, take breaks, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and engage in activities you enjoy.

What inspired you to develop your idea and start your entrepreneurial journey?

During my visit to my hometown in Jharkhand in 2018, I conceptualized starting a handicraft business. My aunt, who is 89 years old, gifted me a beautiful crochet made by her. Since our home products are mostly made from plastic and are usually imported from China, I became emotionally connected and compelled to think about these products.

As part of COVID-19, I connected with the migrants; they faced many difficulties. At that point, I was unable to help as I had expected. Providing funds and assisting them with basic needs was the best I could do. Through constant communication, I later discovered they were good at making handicrafts since they were taught these handcarts in the village. As seamstresses, stitchers, and weavers, they became a part of and started JASMEY HOMES.

What challenges did you face as you transitioned from working in corporate to becoming an entrepreneur?

To transition from an employee to an entrepreneur, quitting the day job is one of the most difficult steps. It is important to consider many factors before becoming an entrepreneur or employee. Mindset, Skillset, and Toolset must be balanced for entrepreneurial endeavors to succeed. One of the most crucial factors in this list is Mindset. Throughout this journey, you will face many challenges and must focus on overcoming them, not just dreaming. Our initial challenges included a delay in sample approval, as logistics for non-essentials were almost at a standstill during the time of COVID-19. Due to this, we had a slow start, but we don’t intend to look back.

Entrepreneurial Mindset: What is it? In what ways can it make a difference in a professional’s journey?

To begin with, we should understand that everything has a cost. The employee mindset needs to be dropped first before taking action. The mindset of an entrepreneur needs to be different from that of an employee. A change like this isn’t easy. Letting go of the egos of large company employees has proven difficult for many. When you start the new venture, you are the CEO – Chief Everything Officer. To accomplish this, a manager needs to be open to various things a formal manager might be unable to do. Taking responsibility for all those decisions and developing a sense of urgency is not easy for corporate managers. At each start-up stage: launch, sustenance, and growth, that is essential. In addition, corporate jobs do not value mistakes and failures. Entrepreneurs must learn from mistakes and failures, often leading to creative innovations. Be open to opportunities and believe in your vision of bringing positive changes to society through your creation. The journey will teach you more about your industry, and you will enjoy all the ups and downs along the way.

What message would you like to share with the FIIB Community?

A successful inspirational entrepreneur solves a problem, expresses creativity, helps their community, is free, and/or overcomes personal or social obstacles. Oftentimes, we measure success by how much money we make, but that’s not why inspirational entrepreneurs are in business. The role of an inspiring entrepreneur is to contribute to social change and improve the quality of life and employment for most people as much as possible. Your work as an entrepreneur creates jobs, reduces costs, and improves product functionality, making life better for everyone. You should not wait too long if you intend to start something independently since this time will not come back. Now is the time to take small steps.

Mr. Rahul is a certified Digital Marketing professional from American Marketing Association and recently completed Management Development Program titled “Future Chief Marketing Officer” from prestigious IIM – Kozhikode. He is actively contributing to the growth of Legal Marketing professionals in India and is a part of BD Roundtable (a private community for legal marketers). Mr. Rahul participated in an interview, hosted by FIIB. The interview was aimed to provide readers an opportunity to learn and inspire from his career path. 

His Journey at FIIB

I can recall that email from FIIB-Admission Cell dated 29th July 2011, stating the commencement of the prestigious 17th Batch of the flagship program, The FIIB PGDM. It was one of its kind experiences after reading the email and getting prepared for the PGDM. I was prepared from my initial days that those two years of my life would be a game changer because this was the only chance to prepare myself before I finally enter the real corporate world. FIIB provided the first step to the golden ladder for attaining highest potential of my skills-set. FIIB is a remarkable and essential part of my journey and taught me many things. FIIB education developed a confidence in me to face the new challenges and struggles of real life. Apart from focusing on the studies, participating in other extra-curricular activities and socializing during the student exchange program really worked well to nourish my overall personality. I am very grateful to FIIB for providing such a platform to me.

Description of his Leadership Style

My leadership style is best described by the policy of being direct and keeping the door open for people. I enjoy delegating tasks and taking the lead on projects, in addition I also like to involve and inspire my team by working “hands-on” to help them.

Contribution of PGDM in the career path 

There are several advantages of pursuing PGDM in comparison to other postgraduate programs. It was not only a lucrative option for career scope for me, but also aligned me well with the latest industry trends.

• PGDM equipped me with skills and knowledge that are essential to manage any organization.
• As a matter of fact, the quality of your qualification determines the kind of career opportunities and choices you will be getting in your professional career. PGDM has helped me in becoming a highly valuable asset of my organization.
• FIIB provided me with vast networking opportunities with Alumni and corporate during PGDM course.

Message for FIIB Community

“Opportunities don’t happen, you create them.” — Chris Grosser

Based on the above quote, my only message for the FIIB community would be that we have to create our own opportunities. Until we are not willing to take our own charge nobody else will. Hence, we should not look out for opportunities that are already there, rather we shall create our own opportunities. It’s just the notion that we realize late.

A journey from learning to practicing, balancing between the different activities, and getting an opportunity to commence my career in the world of business. FIIB has provided me with sufficient freedom to choose my area of study and guided me well through experiential learning. It helped me in transforming myself from a student to a professional. Many people believe that if you are highly compensated and into a highly aspirational profession you will be happy, content, and prosperous. To me, job success is not defined by hefty paychecks, working with renowned corporations, or titles, but by the amount of effort you put in and the level of happiness you achieve. The FIIB alumni network is quite powerful. The most gratifying aspect of my schooling was networking with the FIIB community. It has been a really pleasant experience serving on the FIIB Alumni Committee for many years. Overall, my time at FIIB has been a positive, fruitful learning experience.

Learnings 

Entrepreneurship is something I always want to practice. After joining HDFC, I decided to start my own venture, however, I also want to gather my corporate experience to have an informed start. The early days of my venture were quite stressful as I am the only one who is managing all aspects of my firm be it finance, marketing or operations. At FIIB, we say management can’t be learned but can be practiced, and this helps tremendously in boosting my confidence. This philosophy guides me to connect all the dots I have learnt, and practiced during my college time and while working with corporations. 

Future of Cryptocurrency

Since I am from the field of finance, and have experience in the field of Fintech too, blockchain is vital in the domain of technology. Further, cryptocurrency will become as big as the Internet by 2030. There are high chances that physical currency might get wiped up in the coming times. So, investing in learning technology, specifically in Finance should be the key priority for all future professionals.

How FIIB helps to grow your business?

I consider PGDM from FIIB as a stepping stone to the corporate world. It helped me move up the ladder in all aspects. It stabilizes my thought process in a unique manner. At FIIB , I develop my business acumen through projects, CIPs, and presentations. Learning is completely towards preparing you into a professional and helping you in developing the business mindset. FIIB has given a larger vision of my life and I can proudly say that I am doing what I have learned.

Learning from a corporate background 

The corporate world is a dystopia, where both logic and ego must be set aside if you wish to survive. If you miss an opportunity then you will put yourself behind your competitors. The biggest learning for me from the corporate world is to be innovative and novel and have a collaborative approach towards life. Taking the right opportunity at the right time is the key to success in the corporate World.

A message for the FIIB Community 

I’d like to use this opportunity to request the FIIB family to assist in enhancing the quality of FIIB academic programs by keeping this valuable association robust and consistent. I believe this association will go a long way towards assuring continuous improvements. Our Alma Mater can help the Institute in providing excellent educational services through various modes such as mentoring and expert sessions.

I would like to say that there is no shortcut to success. One should keep a positive outlook and keep a check on their mental well being. It is vital to prioritize things in your life. My mantra is Health first, then Family and then Job. It helps us to grow as an individual.

I’d like to take this time to express my gratitude to my institute, especially to Professor Abhijeet Roy for giving his guidance, support and motivation. I look forward to continuing my commitment in the future as we work together to bring the FIIB family to new heights of success. May we all stay happy and healthy.
