A pioneering industry leader, benevolent philanthropist, and compassionate human, Ratan Tata’s success story will inspire the generations to come. Ratan Tata was an Indian businessman and philanthropist who served as the former chairman of Tata Group and Tata Sons. Son of Naval Tata, Ratan Naval Tata graduated from Cornell University College of Architecture with a bachelor’s degree in architecture. In 1961, Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group and worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel. Later, he was appointed as the chairman of Tata Sons, serving from 1991-2012, after JRD Tata stepped down. Being branded as the wrong choice by the media, Ratan Tata proved everyone wrong with perseverance, dedication, and hard work, placing Tata Group alongside the leading global companies.

Apart from being a business titan, he was also a generous benefactor, involved in many charitable causes. Aiming to provide high-quality education to marginalised children, improve primary healthcare conditions, and transform rural India, Tata Group has collaborated with several NGOs and organisations. By establishing the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, Ratan Tata donated approximately 65% of the profits to charitable purposes such as education, rural development, and healthcare. Recipient of Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and several national and international honorary and awards, Ratan Tata is recognised for his contribution towards various sectors of society.

The Unbeatable Power of Hard Work and Preparation

Ratan Tata’s leadership at Tata group was testament of hard work and preparedness. He built his career from the ground up, moving from an apprentice position to the directorial role. During his 21-year tenure, Tata’s revenue increased more than 40 times and the profit more than 50 times. He helmed the Tata Group through several challenges, solidifying its global mark. Under his visionary leadership, the Tata Group made several acquisitions including the purchase of London-based tea brand, Tetley, South-Korean truck manufacturing unit Daewoo motors, the takeover of Corus Group, an Anglo-Dutch steel manufacturer, and the highly talked about purchase of elite British car brands Jaguar and Land Rover.

Staying Grounded: Ratan Tata’s Humble Approach

Source of inspiration for millions, Ratan Tata has taken his company and country forward. A true icon and legend, there is so much we can learn from the man of innovation, humility, and grace. One of the biggest thing Ratan Tata teaches us is humility. A virtue possessed by very few, Ratan Tata was always humble, staying true to his roots. Listening to everyone, respecting their opinions, and admiring their work, Ratan Tata believed that a true leader is always humble and empathetic. Despite being at the helm of one of the largest businesses in India and the world, he always maintained a down-to-earth demeanor, never flaunting his accomplishments.

The Role of Innovation and Resilience in Sustained Success

Tata Group grew manifold under Ratan Tata’s chairmanship, and it is impossible to believe that once he was branded as the wrong choice to lead the massive enterprise. When he was appointed as the Tata Group chairman, many people questioned JRD Tata’s decision. However, maintaining dignified silence and focusing on proving himself, he positioned Tata Group as a distinguished and influential conglomerate in the world. In the ever-evolving business world, where everything is dynamic, Ratan Tata embodied the importance of innovation and resilience. During his reign, Tata Group expanded into several industries such as hospitality, automotive, software, and telecommunication. During his tenure, Tata Group’s innovation and development plans reached groundbreaking heights, with Tigor EV, the first made-in-India EV, FerroHaat, a digital initiative to organise steel scrap sourcing, and Mia, India’s first 100% recycled gold brand, being some of the many remarkable feats. This reminds us that through innovation and resilience, personal growth and the success of any venture is possible.

Impacting the Lives of Millions Through Philanthropy

Apart from being a top-rank conglomerate, Ratan Tata was also recognised for his philanthropic endeavors. He established Tata Trusts, relentlessly working to improve the access of quality education, healthcare, and sustainable development for the underprivileged section of society. He invested his time in truly understanding the needs of society and actively contributing to its growth and betterment. In times of natural disasters, communal crisis and conflicts, Tata Group was at the forefront, providing aid and relief, reflecting his concern and care about people. Ratan Tata’s philanthropy, benevolence and kindness are a remarkable testament that success is more than making a name for yourself, it is about contributing positively towards the lives of those around us.

Incorporating Ratan Tata’s Vision: Building a Legacy

Ratan Tata’s personal and professional journey offers valuable lessons for us to bring positive impact in society through innovative and adaptable approaches. At FIIB, we recognise the legacy built by Ratan Tata and aim to champion his principle values- hard work, integrity, and innovation. As we try to uphold his legacy, we remain dedicated to fostering a holistic learning and entrepreneurial environment, instilling social responsibility, humility, and generosity in our students. As one of pioneering business institutes in India, our fundamental belief is to strike a balance between hands-on education and theoretical knowledge. By integrating technology, promoting interactive and peer learning, encouraging learning by doing, we aim to shape the future of the business world. Ratan Tata’s vision is not just an aspiration, it is a resolution to nurture the future generations of thought leaders, entrepreneurs, and businesspersons who will continue to drive the world toward progress and innovation.

New Delhi, May 04, 2024: Fortune Institute of International Business (FIIB) recently celebrated its 28th Annual Convocation Ceremony, a momentous event honouring the exceptional achievements of its graduating cohort of PGDM, PGDM FM, and Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). Held at Niryat Bhawan in New Delhi, the ceremony was graced by distinguished guests, including Mr. Sameer Chadha, CEO of KPMG Global Services, and Ms. Patralekha Mohanty, Director of Tech Cloud Oracle and a distinguished alumna.

The event commenced with a ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a heartfelt address from Prof. Radhika Srivastava, Executive Director of FIIB. Prof. Srivastava underscored the ceremony’s significance as a testament to FIIB’s enduring commitment to excellence in management education. She emphasized the institute’s mission of nurturing professionals equipped with robust managerial skills and grounded in ethical values and social responsibility.

Encouraging the graduating cohort to embody the qualities of principled leadership, effective communication, and collaborative teamwork, Prof. Srivastava urged them to serve as ambassadors of FIIB. She emphasized the transformative potential of their education, empowering them to make a meaningful impact in the world by leading sustainable initiatives, driving innovation, and fostering inclusive environments.

Acknowledging the global challenges of our time, Prof. Srivastava underscored the need for principled problem solvers. She reflected on recent developments such as the rise of generative AI and urgent issues like climate change, highlighting the crucial role that the graduating cohort will play as leaders and changemakers in addressing societal needs.

The CEO of KPMG Global Services, in his address, emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance in building a successful career. He shared insights on overcoming self-doubt and embracing a problem-solving mindset, urging students to cultivate humility and empathy, key traits of effective leaders.”In this era of instant gratification, the importance of patience cannot be overstated. Building a successful career takes time, and there are no shortcuts. Make peace with patience, as time always finds a way for talent to shine,” Mr. Chadha remarked, reflecting on his own journey.

Recalling a performance equation, he added, “Performance plus potential minus interference. In my experience, one of the biggest interferences is self-doubt. We must overcome the ‘what ifs’ and embrace a problem-solving mindset for personal growth and to add value to our organizations.” Mr. Chadha further illustrated his points with anecdotes and quotes, invoking the metaphor of “Who has packed your parachute?” to highlight the importance of acknowledging the support systems behind individual success. “Nobody succeeds in life alone. There is always someone behind us – faculty, parents, friends, peers. Always remember your roots and the people who have supported you,” he emphasized. “It is important to know where you are going in life, but never forget where you came from,” Mr. Chadha affirmed, leaving the audience with valuable insights to ponder.

Furthermore, quoting Mark Twain, Ms. Patralekha Mohanty motivated students to leverage the global FIIB community for networking and continuous learning. She emphasized the importance of a growth mindset and encouraged students to dedicate 15 minutes daily to learning, highlighting the compounding effect of consistent effort.

The ceremony also recognized the exceptional academic achievements of the graduating class, with meritorious students receiving medals and awards for their outstanding performances. Notable awardees included:

For decades, the saying “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” has been used to explain the supposed difference between the two sexes. While the origins and intent of this phrase might be lost to time, it often leads to stereotyping and a shallow understanding of how men and women can truly complement each other.

Today, many organizations are laser-focused on achieving gender diversity, striving for an ideal male-to-female employee ratio. While strides have been made toward achieving gender diversity in the workplace, a more progressive approach is needed: Gender Intelligence (GI).

What is Gender Intelligence?

GI goes beyond surface-level biological and cultural differences and delves into the inherent strengths that men and women bring to the table. It involves:

Understanding the Natural Variations: Men and women often approach tasks and decision-making from different angles. These variations are shaped by societal influences, upbringing, and personal experiences.

Appreciating the Value of Difference: These variations are assets, not liabilities. A GI workplace celebrates diversity of thought and leverages it for innovation.

Harnessing Diverse Perspectives: By truly understanding and integrating these viewpoints, organizations can tackle complex challenges from multiple angles, leading to more effective solutions, strategies, and ultimately, sustainable growth.

Why Diversity Alone Isn’t Enough: The Retention Problem

Many companies have embraced the concept of gender diversity, aiming for a specific male-to-female employee ratio without implementing gender intelligence. Simply increasing the number of women in the workforce isn’t enough. A significant challenge lies in retaining this valuable talent. Most women leave organizations after a few years due to factors like:

The Glass Ceiling: When women’s skills aren’t fully utilized, career advancement opportunities are limited, leading to frustration and ultimately, a desire to leave.

Work-Life Balance Struggles: Without adequate support structures, women often face a disproportionate burden when balancing work and personal lives.

Unconscious Bias: Implicit biases in hiring, promotion practices, and project allocation can hinder women’s growth and development.

Studies show that 70% of women leaving the workforce cite these issues as primary reasons. Hence, a careful and thoughtful analysis is necessary. Implementing GI can bridge this gap and create an environment where women feel valued and empowered to thrive.

Harnessing the Power of Difference: Men vs. Women in the Workplace

In a workplace, Men may be more action-oriented and prioritize status, leading to quicker decisions. Women, on the other hand, often excel in strategic thinking and careful analysis, ensuring long-term sustainability. Similarly, women frequently demonstrate strong listening skills and excel at building rapport with clients and stakeholders in comparison to men.

A GI approach recognizes these variations between men and women and strategically allocates tasks. For instance, a team might benefit from a woman’s meticulous planning skills in the initial stages of a project, followed by a man’s decisive action orientation during implementation. It is vital to understand these typical differences in working styles to implement gender intelligence.

Building a Gender-Intelligent Workplace

Creating a truly GI environment requires a commitment from leadership and a shift in company culture. Here are some key steps to foster a GI environment:

Open Communication and Active Listening: Encourage regular, transparent communication and ensure everyone feels heard. This fosters trust, collaboration, and reduces misunderstandings.

Lifelong Learning: Cultivate a culture of continuous learning for all employees. Leaders should be open to asking questions, seeking diverse perspectives, and embracing new ideas.

Feedback Culture: Establish a safe space for constructive feedback, not just in personal interactions, but also in written communication. This allows for growth and development on both individual and team levels.

Unconscious Bias Training: Educate employees about unconscious biases and equip them with strategies to mitigate their impact in hiring, promotion, and project allocation.

The Bottom Line: A More Productive and Inclusive Future

Implementing Gender Intelligence doesn’t require a complete overhaul. By making small adjustments and fostering a culture of respect for differences, you can create a truly inclusive workplace. Remember, differentiation is key, and stereotyping is detrimental.

A GI workplace unleashes the full potential of your entire workforce, leading to increased productivity, innovation, a competitive edge, and a more positive work environment for all. In the end, it’s a win-win for both the employees and the organization.

FIIB: A Great Place To Work

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives have profoundly transformed workplace culture and gender equality at FIIB. By prioritizing D&I, FIIB has cultivated an environment where every employee feels genuinely valued and respected, regardless of gender or background. The result? A significant reduction in unconscious biases and stereotypes, rendering the FIIB workplace fairer and more equitable.

FIIB’s commitment to gender equality is evident in policies promoting equal pay, parental leave, and flexible work arrangements, bridging the gender gap and fostering a more balanced workforce. With almost 90% of leadership positions held by women, FIIB showcases exceptional leadership abilities. FIIB attracted a diverse applicant pool by promoting its vision and mission through thought leadership efforts, resulting in 40% female admissions in the batch of ’23. The inclusive curriculum increased student satisfaction, and initiatives like the Jaagriti Club, Responsibility Summit, and TEDxFIIB events raised awareness of diversity and inclusion.

Additionally, FIIB’s emphasis on sensitivity and cultural awareness training promotes understanding and respect for diverse cultures and backgrounds. These efforts have garnered external validation, reflected in accolades such as the ‘Great Place to Work’ certificate and recognition at the India International Education Excellence awards.

Some of the key sustainability initiatives carried out by FIIB to date include:

1. In collaboration with the Haub School of Business, FIIB developed a sustainability dashboard to help universities share best practices on the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With its SDG Dashboard, FIIB is the fourth Indian business school to have one.

2. As a core course of FIIB, SIP (Social Internship Program) provides students with fieldwork experience in the social sector. Collaboration with Social Sector Organizations (SSOs) aligns students’ project needs with those of the organizations.

3. FIIB has adopted a cluster of five villages under the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of the GOI. Primary surveys were conducted in all villages this year, and activities aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals are underway.

4. FIIB Jaagriti Club aims to contribute to society by teaching service orientation to students. Jaagriti Club held Nukkad Natak, Skill Development for Primary School Children, Education Awareness Activities, and Clothes Donation Drives this year.

5. At our TEDx events, ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’ are spread in communities. The 5th edition of TEDxFIIB is yet to mark another development, growth, and knowledge milestone on March 02, 2024.

6. A major component of FIIB’s mission is to conduct sustainability-driven research. Seventeen papers were published, and several research conferences related to sustainability issues were organized and attended by faculty this year.

7. “TILES- Technology, Inclusiveness, Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Sustainability” was Manthan’s theme this year. The concept of ‘Manthan’ relates to UN SDG Goal 8, which states that “Sustained and inclusive economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all and improve living standards”.

8. FIIB has also partnered with Betterlyf to foster a sense of well-being and mental health among students, faculty, and staff.

9. To pursue a more equitable and empowered world, FIIB has a strategic partnership with IDEA, the Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association, an organization dedicated to empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) through entrepreneurship.

10. Furthermore, FIIB incorporates sustainability concepts into its curriculum and courses. In this course, students learn sustainability concepts and apply them daily.
